By the end of the year 2019 we were still not quite satisfied with historical accuracy, aesthetics, functionality and reliability of Stauffer-like tuners already offered by the market available to us. Therefore, with the coming year 2020, we finally decided to invest into a few modest pieces of metalworking machinery. Rather simple and compact, they allowed us to develop our own copies of Viennese tuners common for Johann Georg Stauffer (1778 - 1853) guitars and alike.
At the beginning, we included two motifs for engraving the back plate into our offer. "Vienna", the classical one, made according to an authentic period tuner, and "an Angel", to show how customizable the engraving is. Otherwise the tuners are internally identical and interchangeable.
A set of hand-made tuners unique to our 6-string Stauffer and Hauser 1920 models.
They're made mostly of brass, a bit of steel and soft solder.
Engraving grooves together with steel rods are coated and colored by the bluing process, which makes the tuner corrosion resistant.
The gear ratio of 1:13 ensures very fine tuning.
Both left-handed option and custom back plate engraving possible.
If necessary, the tuners can be completely disassembled. The individual components are held together only mechanically.
